Having A Great Time With Your Kids

2 Tips For Mounting Your Rifle Scope Using New Rings

If you enjoy going hunting, you may have decided that this year you want to use a scope instead of the sights that are already on top of the firearm. You may have even already purchased the rings through which the scope will be mounted. However, if this is your first time mounting a scope using rings, you may be uncertain as to what you need to do. If so, use the following tips to help you as you mount your rifle scope using the new rings.

1.  Wipe down Both the Scope and the Rings Beforehand

Before you start attempting to mount your scope using the rings, the first thing that you need to do is to wipe down both the scope and the rings. If you leave any oil residue, dust, or other grime on their surfaces, you may not get a tight hold on the scope, and it could cause misalignment of the reticle that would affect your rifle's accuracy.

When you go to wipe down the surfaces, use only a soft, clean rag to do so. You can use a chamois cloth, mechanic's cloth, or even a clean cloth diaper for this job. If you use anything other than a soft cloth, you risk the chance of scratching the metal.

Do not use any cleaners or oils when cleaning the surfaces, as doing so could make them slippery while you are trying to work with them. Use the dry cloth with light pressure instead.

2.  Tighten the Screws Only after the Reticle Is Aligned Properly

Once you have cleaned the rings and scope and inserted the scope through the holes, you may think that you need to go ahead and tighten the screws to secure it in place. However, before you start tightening the screws, you need to make sure the reticle, or crosshairs, are properly aligned.

If you do not look through the scope to ensure that the center reticle is straight up and down, it will affect your aim while shooting. If you try to turn the scope with the screws tightened, you will end up digging into the scope and damaging both it and the rings.

Using the tips above can help ensure that your scope is securely mounted and straight within the rings. If you are still uncertain as to how to mount your rifle scope, contact a business that offers rings such as Ruger scope rings for more information about their installation as well as accurately aligning the scope within them.
