Having A Great Time With Your Kids

Before You Rent An RV For The First Time, Do These Things

Sometimes you wonder if it just would not be cheaper to rent an RV for a family road trip, rather than paying motel/hotel fees each night. Not only could you stay overnight in some box store parking lots for free, but everyone in the family can also be reasonably entertained and comfortable on the road. However, before you rent an RV and jump on the road, you need to do the following things first.

Borrow or Buy RV Enthusiast Books

These books will give you lots of travel tips for RV'ing. They will also discuss the various systems involved in an RV, and how to fix things if they break down. Some RV enthusiast books will also give you several locations all over the country where you can camp out with the rented RV if you want to experience local tourist sites.

Get a Lesson in How to Connect Everything

When you stop to camp, RV campsites provide hookups for electricity and water. They also provide an RV black water dumping station. You cannot use any of these if you do not know how to connect them! Before you rent an RV, ask the RV rental people to show you how to connect these particular systems to the connections provided by RV campgrounds. Since you will need to empty your black water tank at least once on a week-long road trip, you need to know (at the very least!) how to do that.

Learn How to Drive an RV (No Kidding!)

Driving an RV is nothing like driving a car. It is not even similar to driving a pickup truck. It is akin to driving a delivery truck or a small moving truck. You have to learn to turn wide and tight when turning corners and how to work the brakes when you need to come to a sudden stop. Before you rent the RV, ask to take an RV for a test drive to see if you can manage driving such a large vehicle with so many blind spots. Some people get really nervous about driving such a vehicle, and then they will not take the road trip they intended to take.

Going to Bring Your Family Car? Learn How to Hitch It to the RV

Some people who own an RV frequently bring their cars along on vacation by connecting it to a rear trailing hitch. To tow your vehicle with, you need to know how to hook it up and how to release it. Ask the RV rental people to show you how.
