Going River Rafting For The First Time This Summer? 2 Tips To Help You

River rafting is exciting and a lot of fun. If this is your first time going river rafting, you may be excited but also confused at what you should take and how everything works. If so, below are two tips on things you need to pack, as well as how to stay safe on your trip.

Packing

Somethings you need to pack for your river rafting trip include:

  • Quick dry bathing suit
  • Synthetic shirt to protect you from the sun
  • Footwear that will not slip off your feet, such as sneakers, water boots, etc.
  • Hat to protect your face from the sun
  • Sunglasses with a strap so they do not fall off your face
  • Waterproof clothing in case it rains, such as pants and jacket
  • Synthetic socks

Along with these things, bring some dry clothes to wear after you finish your trip and bring along a bag to put your wet clothes in.

Take some sunscreen, water bottles, and snacks if it is a long day trip. Do not bring electronics with you. They may get wet and this is a time to enjoy nature instead of staring at a smartphone or tablet screen. You should bring a waterproof camera along with you as you will want to take a lot of pictures.

Do not take anything in the raft that is important to you as you may lose everything if your raft tips over.

Safety

Your river rafting guide will help keep you and everyone safe on the trip. It is still helpful for you to learn safety tips on your own. First, you need to make sure you are secure in your raft. Place your feet in the foothold. Do not put your feet too far into the foothold, however, as if your river raft tips over you do not want to get your feet stuck.

When the waves get rough paddle harder to help brace yourself and to keep your raft upright. If your boat does tip over, look at the guide, as they will steer you away from danger. You will have to swim hard as you will be swimming against the water. If you are not a good swimmer, you need to tell your guide this before you leave.

Contact the guide before the trip to ask the best type of life jacket for you to wear. They also may rent life jackets if you do not want to purchase one.
