Looking For Some Personal Protection? 4 Steps To Help You Choose Your First Handgun

If you've decided that's time to take your personal protection into your own hands, and you're about to purchase your first handgun, don't just head out and buy the first one you find. It takes a lot of time and consideration to choose the right handgun. Here are four steps you need to take when purchasing your first handgun.

Choose Revolver or Semi-Automatic

Now that you're going to purchase your first handgun, the first thing you need to do is choose between a revolver and a semi-automatic. With a revolver, the bullets are loaded into the cylinder by hand. You usually have about 5 single shots, meaning they come out one at a time each time you pull the trigger. With a semi-automatic, the bullets are loaded into a magazine. Most smaller caliber semi-automatic magazines hold about 9 rounds. It's important to note that semi-automatic handguns may come equipped with safeties, designed to prevent the gun from firing. However, revolvers do not come with safeties.

Take Your Hands Into Consideration

When it comes to choosing the right handgun, it's crucial that you take your hands into consideration. The last thing you want is to purchase a handgun that doesn't fit right in your hands. Before you choose your handgun, spend some time in the gun shop. Get the feel of the guns by holding them in your hands. You want to be able to get your hands comfortably around the grip, without too much effort. It's also a good idea to check out the local gun range. Some ranges have handguns that you can try out. This will give you some hands-on experience with a few different handguns. Be sure to try out both revolvers and semi-automatics.

Plan for Concealed Carry

If you plan on applying for your concealed carry permit once you have your handgun, you'll need to take that into consideration, as well. For instance, if you're planning on carrying your handgun in a SOB holster – small of the back – you'll want to choose one that will fit comfortably.

Head to the Range

Once you have your handgun, the first thing you should do is head to the range. Try to get as much range time in as you can while you're adjusting to your new handgun. Practicing at the range will ensure that you know how to use your handgun properly, and that you'll be ready should an emergency arise.
